Five Reasons To See 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is awesome. It's the top-ranked flick on our list of the Best Movies of 2011. What more do you need to know? David Fincher's adaptation of the first book in the Millennium Trilogy is as faithful as it gets (with an important deviation here and there), complete with gruesome twists and stellar performancesindeed, it hosts what could very well be the greatest performance of the year. Rooney Mara talks Salander! If all that isn't enough incentive to check out "Dragon Tattoo" this week, here are five other reasons you need to see this movie. Rooney, Rooney, Rooney Need I say more? Rooney Mara is Lisbeth Salander, in a way that not even Noomi Rapace quite captured in my opinion. The "Social Network" actress' transformation into the titular tattooed computer hacker is breathtaking, her commitment to the character a sight that all movie lovers must behold. Mara isn't just a shoe-in for an Oscar nom next year chances are very, very good that she'll be our next Best Actress winner. Craig and The Vangers Rooney steals the show, but her co-stars are all perfectly cast as well. Daniel Craig's Mikhail Blomkvist is a note-perfect interpretation of the crusading journalist of Stieg Larsson's novels. Christopher Plummer's Henrik Vanger is appropriately charming and tortured. Stellan Skarsgard brings it, as he always does. But the best co-star of them all: the cat. That poor, poor cat. David Fincher on his "Dragon Tattoo" adaptation! Hedestad So much of the success of "Dragon Tattoo" depends on the visuals, and to the surprise of no one, Fincher does a brilliant job bringing this world from the page to the screen. The director's vision of Hedestad is a perfect replica of the Hedestad from my and, I suspect, many readers' imaginations. The film makes great use out of an unspeakably beautiful landscape to play host to such a thoroughly horrific tale. And speaking of horrific The Scenes Yes, those scenes. You know the ones I'm talking about. Fincher's "Dragon Tattoo" does not shy away from or tone down the graphic nature of the tale's most deeply disturbing scenes. The only thing harder than watching these moments is trying not to watch it's virtually impossible to look away from the horror Lisbeth faces and, in turn, delivers. The Ending As you've likely heard by now, the ending to Fincher's "Dragon Tattoo" deviates somewhat from the original Swedish novel and film. Don't freak out: it's a good change. Nothing drastic, but an important enough tweak that makes the mystery's big reveal play out smoother than ever before. "Dragon Tattoo" fans owe it to themselves to check out the American adaptation if only to see how they feel about the new, altered ending and to see Rooney, Rooney, Rooney, of course. Daniel Craig on his "Dragon Tattoo" fears! Are you seeing "Dragon Tattoo" this week? Let us know in the comments section and on Twitter!

The Closer Creator James Duff Previews the Show's "Jolly" 100th Episode
Kyra Sedgwick, Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin In our season-long examination of love, The Closer would be remiss if it didn't pause to consider the fuzziest of all human passions: a fondness for our own golden past.Hardly anything tickles warm, childhood memories like the holidays. Gifts, decorations, friendly gatherings, family feasting and favorite songs blend to paint a glowing patina over our best memories. Unfortunately, the American brand of nostalgia borders on amnesia, and holding on to our youthful attachments oftentimes requires overlooking a host of problematic truths, or so our intrepid civilian tech, Buzz Watson, discovers when dragging his younger sister, Casey, on their annual trip to a local Christmas fair. The North Pole Village - filled with evergreen trees and shiny ornaments - children in line to see Santa and strolling reindeer - is a little like a Rorschach test to this pair of battling siblings. To Buzz, it's like a present waiting to be opened on the morning of December 25th; to his little sister, Casey, it's a tacky con game with fake snow designed to coax parents out of hard-earned cash while they perpetuate childish myths about St. Nick. They're both wrong. The North Pole Village very quickly becomes a crime scene featuring (among other things) a fatally flawed zip line, drug dealing elves and some extremely poor excuses for Santa Claus, one of whom is played with effortless charm by Fred Willard, famous for his star turns in movies like Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind and Best in Show. In "You Have the Right to Remain Jolly," Mr. Willard helps The Closer celebrate its 100th episode. We thought about marking this event by doing something dark and mysterious, but surveying the rest of our December episodes, and considering the pessimistic mood of the country, we felt like an attempt to cheer people up wouldn't be entirely amiss. And, besides killing off Santa Claus, I can personally attest to the fact that the men of Major Crimes certainly felt more optimistic after meeting Buzz's sister, the gorgeous and amiable Christine Wood (with whom I share a birthday). Casey's physical charms prove such a distraction that both Buzz and Chief Johnson are a little on the warpath in this episode, which also features the return of Mark Pellegrino as Brenda's determined attorney, Gavin Q. Baker.I don't want to give up everything in Santa's sleigh. But if you're one of those people who loves a good elf fight, and wonders now and then why The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy isn't used to score more television shows, tonight's episode is just for you. Be sure to stay around for the weather report at the end. And special thanks to this week's guest stars for playing out our little holiday extravaganza with the good spirits of Christmases past.Until next week... - James Duff

'Glee' Eyes Gloria Estefan to Play Santana's Mother
About three weeks ago, ICM president Chris Silbermann presented an offer to buy out at least part of financier Suhail Rizvi's majority interest in the agency, but that offer has now expired, according to a knowledgeable source. However, Silbermann's effort to amass a controlling interest in the Century City-based talent agency continues, and on Wednesday he met with Rizvi in NY to continue discussions, according to another source with knowledge of the dealings.our editor recommendsInside the Fight for ICM's Future (Analysis)The Secrets of Hollywood Agency Mailrooms Silbermann and colleagues Bob Broder and Ted Chervin are said to be frustrated with Rizvi, who appears to be disinterested in Silbermann's stated plan to transform the agency into a partnership. The trio is said to bristle at a corporate structure that essentially makes them employees of Rizvi, whose Birmingham, Mich.-based Rizvi Traverse Management acquired a controlling interest in ICM in 2005. PHOTOS: Secrets of Hollywood Agency Mailrooms While many industry players have expected Silbermann and his former partners at boutique agency Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann to leave the 36-year old ICM to form a new agency, sources say that Silbermann is more interested in staying and building ICM rather than starting a new company. But the situation is still very fluid, and sources say other possible outcomes include the renegotiation of the ICM principals' current deals; the acquisition of ICM by a rival talent agency; and the departure of Silbermann, ICM chairman Jeff Berg or others. Rizvi Traverse and ICM declined to comment. The cost of reducing the stake held by Rizvi -- a press-shy private equity investor whose firm also holds interests in Twitter, Facebook and Summit Entertainment -- is not entirely clear, nor is it clear what financing is backing Silbermann's bid. In November 2005, Rizvi Traverse made a $75 million investment in Century City-based ICM, and Merrill Lynch provided additional debt financing for a total of about $100 million. A knowledgeable source says that Rizvi has already wrung a profit out of his firm's investment in ICM, and Merrill Lynch has been bought of out the deal. Silbermann would not necessarily need to acquire Rizvi Traverse's entire stake in the agency in order to gain control and implement his partnership plans; an April Bloomberg report said Berg, Silbermann and some agents hold ICM stock. The Hollywood Reporter reported Nov. 15 that Rizvi, who resides in Greenwich, Conn., has grown less interested in the long-term future of ICM after concluding that the agency won't provide him the platform to make a larger impact as an investor in media. He is said to be quietly shopping his interest in the agency, according to a knowledgeable source. Silbermann joined ICM in July 2006, when the agency acquired his company, Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann, for about $70 million. Silbermann's group is a powerhouse in the lucrative television packaging industry, with clients including Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and comedy kingpin Chuck Lorre. The Silbermann group is said to supply ICM with a significant share of its total revenue. In a May interview with THR, Silbermann discussed his desire to convert the agency to a partnership, saying: "I believe that agents should be able to reap what they sow. Since the time I joined ICM, the plan has been to evolve the company into the best possible structure for the clients and the agents, one that rewards success." Complicating matters is Silbermann's frosty relationship with Berg. Sources say one option on the table is for Silbermann and Co.-or even Rizvi-to purchase Berg's share of the agency. However, the cost to buy out Berg is believed to be high: a knowledgeable source says Berg's stake in the company is valued in the range of $20 million to $30 million. Natalie Wood Investigation: What the People Involved Are Saying
NY - After a long search, Time Warner has chosen Laura Lang, who has been CEO of digital advertising powerhouse Digitas, as the new CEO of its Time Inc. magazine unit, the entertainment conglomerate said on Wednesday. Lang, who has led Publicis-owned Digitas since 2008 after joining the firm in 1999, is expected to continue an aggressive digital push by the unit, which is the largest U.S. magazine publisher. Her hire comes after Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes early this year fired Jack Griffin who had caused a culture clash as leader of the magazine division, according to company sources. "Although Jack is an extremely accomplished executive, I concluded that his leadership style and approach did not mesh with Time Inc. and Time Warner," Bewkes said back then in a memo that was unusually candid for the media industry. Lang will assume leadership of Time Inc. from an interim management committee composed of Howard Averill, Maurice Edelson and John Huey, which guided the company over the last 10 months. Her bio on Digitas' Web site highlights that she has driven international growth and helped the company attract new clients. "Laura's leadership experience, brand management expertise, understanding of digital and marketing and strong relationships with the creative and advertising communities are a great fit for Time Inc.," said Bewkes. "She is the right person to lead the company as it aggressively evolves its businesses during a time of great change and opportunity in publishing." Said Lang: "I am thrilled to be joining the best journalists and publishing executives in the world at Time Inc. during such an exciting time for media and publishing. Time Inc's premier brands and stellar reputation, along with Time Warner's commitment to lead the digital transformation of all its businesses, will lead to great opportunities to deepen our connections with consumers." Glee: Santana's Coming Out and 8 Other Things We're Grateful for in "I Kissed a Girl"
Naya Rivera, Dianna Agron And that's how you come out in Lima Heights Adjacent. It wasn't until Finn brought out her competitive edge (hello, sectionals!) that Santana considered re-entering Mr. Schue's choir room and letting her friends help her out of the closet. And even then, she didn't get any warm fuzzies after being serenaded with Kurt and Blaine's cutesy performance of Pink's equally earnest "F---in' Perfect" because being gay doesn't mean she's going soft. Instead, after Finn created a safe haven for her to the sounds of the more appropriate "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," Santana paraded proudly down the halls of McKinley, ladies in tow, to the no-shame anthem "I Kissed a Girl." Abuela hasn't come around yet, because not everyone can be Burt Hummell, but it was so nice to see her show Brittany some affection outside of Breadsticks. Because we so enjoyed this week's Glee- and because we're still in the Thanksgiving spirit as we polish off Turkey Day leftovers - eight other things we're super thankful for in no particular order (Psycho Quinn, you are not one of them): 1. Both elections are over. Sue's congressional campaign only stuffed her further down the rabbit hole of insanity - Sue's best at McKinley dealing with McKinley-sized enemies. As for the student body election... at least we got Brittany's "Run the World (Girls)" out of it. Wonder how much of Brittany's new pro-sugar, anti-tornado policies we'll see enacted at McKinley. 2. Coach Bieste's singing debut with "Jolene" (because we don't acknowledge "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," and neither should you). The song was a great choice for those deep vocals, and dammit, didn't it just break your heart? We would never have picked Bieste and Sue for a love triangle, but it works brilliantly as Bieste continues to embrace her uniqueness and Sue finds something besides New Directions to obsess over. 3. We'll always have Mr. Schue's facial expressions. He's been given a great big nothing to do so far, unless you count inviting Emma's ginger supremacist parents over and then singing her off the ledge after, and whatever it was that he did as Burt's "campaign manager." But at least we still get some priceless reaction shots. Watching him rock out to Puck's "I'm the Only One" in that cheesy way only Mr. Schue can was still gold. 4. Shelby and Santana. k.d. Lang's "Constant Craving." The end. We're still not sure what to feel watching Shelby hook up with Puck, besides slightly mortified. But listening to Shelby sing about it in the most perfect closing song possible for this episode? Yes, please. Bonus points for a nice (but brief) cameo from Kurt, now struggling to find his place after losing the election and watching his father win. 5. Rachel won't compete in Sectionals. Hold on! Here's why: Every year there has to be something to make Sectionals difficult for New Directions (the lack of Mr. Schue, Kurt joining the Warblers). This year we've got The Troubletones vs. a Rachel-less New Directions. That's interesting. 6. Every single song in the episode. That said, we're calling for a moratorium on Katy Perry. (Unless Artie gets to do the Kayne West rap on "E.T.") 7. Finn's back and better than ever. Just us or does he actually have the best stuff this season? It was no fun going several episodes without hearing a solo, but now we've got an entertaining bromance between Finn and Rory, dashed college dreams, potential heartbreak with NY-bound Rachel, growing animosity for golden boy Blaine, and tonight, the earnest way he reached out to Santana. 8. The slam on Blaine's "hideous bow ties." Just because he doesn't have his Warbler Wear, doesn't mean he needs to dress like a clown. In the same spirit of giving, a speedy list of things we're not so grateful for: An overall lack of Rory (by our count, the kid only has 4 episodes left!)...Rachel not having enough common sense to stuff the ballot box with, er, fewer ballots... Schue-Be-Do-Be-Do, where are you?... The decision to make Quinn a raving lunatic (Puck's speech was nice, but she was a mean girl last spring, not an insane one.) What did you think of Santana's coming out? What kind of a president do you think Brittany will make? Can Sectionals happen without Rachel? How can this Shelby and Puck thing end except for badly? Why are the writers doing what they're doing to Quinn? Tell us in the comments.

The sci-fi follow up was initially slated for any June 29, 2012 release, but just been knocked to May 17, 2013 where it will require the place vacated by Roland Emmerich's 'Singularity,' which moves to November 2013. The whole cast is placed to come back for that follow up, which is shot in three dimensional. J.J. Abrams, who's co-writing the follow-as much as his 2009 reboot, was too busy with 'Super 8' hitting the initial deadline the June 2012 slot now would go to 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation.' The apparently flexible deals for that cast -- including stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto -- permitted Vital to hang about until Abrams and the authors needed to start focus on the 2nd go-round from the Enterprise crew. The studio is clearly wishing for an additional hit: The refurbished 'Star Trek' gained $258 million in The United States and $130 million worldwide. Tarsem Singh Promises His Snow Whitened Movie Is going to be 'Sickeningly Kiddie,' Has Title In Your Mind
If you have seen the serial killer thriller 'The Cell' or caught glimpses of Tarsem Singh's new action movie, 'Immortals,' you may be surprised to understand the director who favors ultra-violent, entrails-heavy situations is pointing the Snow Whitened movie that doesn't feature Billy Burke carrying a sword. Moviefone sitting lower using the director (search for our approaching talk about how 'Immortals' pushes the R-rating to the limits) and that he revealed the untitled film with Lily Collins and Jennifer Aniston will probably be a "very sweet kiddie" movie. He's also got a concept for that title. The next film is Snow Whitened... That is for kids. So no one's getting disembowled? I really hope not. They requested me basically wanted to really make it edgy and that i stated, "No interest, simply no interest." It is a children's movie, but my stuff is commonly polarizing. When it is for kids, it's like, sickeningly kiddie, so when it is the other way, it's sickeningly graphic for individuals. Both of them are Suitable for me. It's comme ci comme ça that I am afraid of. It's interesting, because within the rival Snow Whitened project, Snow Whitened is available killing people it appears, according to 'Immortals,' that you would become more attracted to that particular version. Not whatsoever. That is what the studio thought, that I'd need to make it edgy. It is a family movie. When I am completed with violence, you won't get anything apart from an R rating. So I wish to create a kiddie movie. It is a story book for kids and also the family. Just embrace it. If you wish to push the envelope making Snow Whitened edgy, I believe edgy to whom? Edgy for Disney or edgy for Gasper Noé? What type of violence would you like and i'm not interested whatsoever inside it. And So I got the film which i wanted and it is another film. You think your similar kind of filmmaker to Gasper Noé? No, I believe his films are perfect. I believe [Michael] Haneke is fantastic. They are not similar filmmakers whatsoever, they are just making their personal films. Personally, i -- although I believe my films aren't anything like his -- want to possess the type of items that Roman Polanski makes. Whatever he's made, you can observe him inside it, from 'Knife within the Water' to 'Chinatown,' you cannot tell which is much more of him. In each of them, he's his DNA inside it. And So I don't care whether it's a story book or perhaps a movie about gods or serial murders, Among the finest to make certain that I am inside it. What's your DNA that you are investing in your movies? If you're able to define it, it is extremely small. It is a very lengthy mortal coil, if you're able to define it, there is a problem. Simply by general token, I'd say it is commonly polarizing to many people. When it is violent, it is commonly just a little extreme so when it's sweet, it is commonly just a little sweet, but when you have not seen 'The Fall,' you would not understand what I am speaking about. It appears just like a Russian setting in the early artwork we have seen to date. Don't think posters and trailers. They simply put that out because they are thinking, "Oh, we must put something out, so let us released the very first drawing which was done prior to the director ever did a collection.Inch I had been beginning using the forest a lot more compared to castle, a lot more, while you stated, 'Alexander Nevsky' [in mention of the 'Immortals' elaborate headgear] but a lot more Andrei Tarkovsky's 'Ivan the Terrible' [Erectile dysfunction note: Sergei Eisenstein really directed 'Ivan the Terrible' and 'Alexander Nevsky'], but it is much nearer to [the The spanish language architect] Gaudi inside a snowy place, which he's never done. So, just mix individuals up. Have you got a title yet for that film? Not. If only. But apparently there's some legal stuff being taken care of. Therefore it is not necessarily your final decision exactly what the title's likely to be? No, it's all regulated legal areas. For me personally, 'Snow,' could be perfect, just 'Snow.' Bad Movies We Love: Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is a celebrated American film where Meryl Streep tries to convince you she’s brain-damaged for 108 minutes. She has no guess as to who birthed her blonde, blue-eyed, ABBA-squawking daughter, but she’ll storm about a sunny Grecian isle until we all agree to forget she’s doing this for an obese stack of cash. What a Swedish fishy musical this is! It gives Stockholm Syndrome to thinking people. Let’s watch it 30 times, channel Agnetha and Anni-Frid using ethereal harmonies and beige lipstick, and recount the five greatest musical numbers in this insane, aquamarine spectacle of light, sound and sheer embarrassment. I nearly forgot: The youthful star of Mamma Mia is Amanda Seyfried, who leads this week’s new release In Time with a “futuristic look” (code for “Bridget Fonda haircut”). That movie looks unbearable, but Seyfried makes Mamma Mia a pleasure using her Tila Tequila-shaped head and physique. She’s supported by an exhausted cast of veterans wind-burnt by time and sitcom pilots. Together they’re a mysteriously savory blend, and they create a movie that is pretty much Glee for Adderall addicts, or Kidz Bop for chocolate-crazed, Fabio-literate adults. The ridiculous paternity narrative is irrelevant — I’m hopped up on pure ABBA euphoria after re-watching Mamma Mia!, and here are the five covers worth revisiting on this droopy Wednesday. 5. Christine Baranski’s husky, libidinous “Does Your Mother Know” Christine Baranski has graced the pages of Bad Movies We Love before, but here she comes into her own as a barky she-wolf with a legendary mandible. In the hard-veined hands of Baranski, ABBA’s “Does Your Mother Know” bursts with powerful horniness. Watch as this goody-goody Good Wife player juts and thrusts with the chutzpah of a much older raptor. 4. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper’s “Lay All Your Love on Me” “LAYLOM” is ABBA’s secretly nastiest jam, and the most unsettling. The chrous’s druid incantation doubles as a sex-slave shanty, and these two oiled-up lovers chirp it with gusto. Well, Seyfried does. Dominic Cooper hoots like a nervous chorus boy trying to impress his sophomore girlfriend, but Seyfried’s Nordic glee gives way to sexy bliss. Don’t go wasting your emotions on him, Amanda! 3. Julie Walters’ utterly irrelevant “Take a Chance on Me” Well after Mamma Mia! has given up on plot and sense, Julie Walters gallops up on a table and begs a dude to love her. This is just like life for many of us. ABBA’s entrancing, rolling beat is not as hypnotic when it’s shoehorned into this already-crammed runtime, but Julie’s confused rendition is unforgettable, for better or for worse. 2. Meryl Streep spends her “Money, Money, Money” on singing lessons and this year’s overalls. “Money, Money, Money” belongs in My Fair Lady or another Lerner & Loewe jamboree, not an ABBA musical full of evocative disco mood pieces. As the movie kicks off, Meryl charges around her island estate like Ricardo Montalban and gripes about how poor she is. This is another farfetched idea, in case you’re keeping track. Please bear witness as Sophie’s Choice’s Polish pixie has to choose between dignity and insanity while a tantalizing Swedish beat plays the odious kommandant in charge of her fate. Spoiler: The Europop wins. Throw your dignity in the back of a train car and watch as your inhibitions go chug-chug-chugging away! 1. Pierce Brosnan’s so-so-so-so-so-so-so-aptly titled “S.O.S.” Daniel Craig revived James Bond’s sexuality even though we didn’t know it had withered away long ago. Who ruined 007’s naughty streak, you ask? Hint: Here, Pierce Brosnan yelps the lyrics to “S.O.S.,” and it seems like his last hit of Viagra is on the line. Remington Steele is just a bizarre choice for a singing part in any film, and when Brosnan’s belting power notes like a balladeer, it’s hard to watch. Hell, it’s hard to live. I won’t burden you with the video — the audio track of his weirdly accented, gurgly rendition is enough to give you license to kill yourself. Because your landlocked, deprived existence can’t get better than this. Awful. And incredible. Follow Louis Virtel on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Publication of the book, which is attracting attention among terrorism and national security experts in Washington, was reportedly delayed for several months so it could be cleared by government officials. PHOTO: Best Presidents in Film and Television Pfaffer, author of the best-selling Warrior Soul: The Memoir of a Navy SEAL, is said to have gotten a firsthand account of the raid from SEAL members actually involved in the operation. Crucially, sources who are familiar with the book say that SEAL Target Geronimo paints a daring and dramatic account of the raid that is at odds with the official White House version. Pfaffer writes that the SEALs entered Bin Laden's home from the roof and killed him in the first 90 seconds of the raid. The official account has Bin Laden dying near the end of an approximately 40-minute raid, after hiding in his bedroom as the SEALS fought their way up from the ground floor. PHOTOS: Actors Who've Played Politicians Pfaffer also provides new information on the weeks and months leading up to the raid and relates the history of the Navy's elite and secretive SEAL Team Six. SEAL Target Geronimo pins the blame for Bin Laden's exposure on Ayman Zawahiri, his second-in-command, who repeatedly used the same compromised courier to communicate with the Al Qaeda leader. Pfaffer also explores the lessons the SEALs learned from their mission against Somali pirates that helped them in the Bin Laden operation, and he delves into the history and operations of the Joint Special Operations Command, the secretive military organization in charge of the military's special operations forces. SEAL Target Geronimo is the latest in a series of book and film projects about the elite Navy special operations forces generally and the Bin Laden raid specifically. The Hurt Locker team of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal are making a movie about the raid for Sony. NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote that Bigelow and Boal got "top-level access to the most classified mission in history" in putting together the script. STORY: Bin Laden Filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal Shoot Back at Republican Congressman Sony is said to be reconsidering its announced release date of Oct. 12, 2012, meaning the still-untitled film would not hit theaters on the eve of the Nov. 6, 2012, presidential election. Bigelow has not yet started shooting the movie. Another Navy SEALs movie, Act of Valor, is scheduled to hit theaters in February from Relativity Media. That film, made with the cooperation of the military and featuring actual soldiers, doesn't specifically deal with the Bin Laden killing. Another book, SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper by Howard Wasdin and Stephen Templin, which fortuitously came out just weeks after Bin Laden's death, immediately jumped up Amazon's sales rankings and landed on The NY Times best-seller list. And in September, IDW published Code Word: Geronimo, a graphic novel by Dale Dye, the retired marine captain and noted technical adviser on many Hollywood war movies. Related Topics Osama Bin Laden

New moniker for SAG/AFTRA?
Leaders of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists haven't yet decided what they'll call the combined union, should members approve a merger next year, but it's highly probable that the SAG and AFTRA names will survive.
Reps of the unions meet this weekend in a third set of confabs to hammer out details of the merger plan with the goal of presenting a final proposal to the national boards in January. Reps for SAG and AFTRA had no comment on the potential name. Several sources have emphasized that the name hasn't been discussed formally yet but strongly suggest that the SAG and AFTRA names will both remain. The SAG/AFTRA Group for One Union will begin meeting Friday and conclude on Tuesday. In the two previous meetings in June and August, the unions have disclosed only general details about the substance of discusssions. The group's cautious approach contrasts with the tack taken in 2003 when the merger proponents selected an ambitious moniker -- the Alliance of Intl. Media Artists. SAG voters then narrowly turned down the proposal, which required a 60% super-majority to go through. Proponents argued in that campaign that the new union would be more powerful and would remove jurisdicitional overlaps but opponents contended that the benefits of the new union were negligible and that SAG would have lost its unique character as an actors union. The AIMA designation would have been for the combined organization with a trio of affiliates -- SAG for actors; the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists for broadcasters; and the American Federation of Recording Artists for recording artists. Merger advocates said at the time that the official group chose the name as the way to "best identify media professionals who work around the globe in a variety of disciplines."SAG was founded in 1933 and held a variety of celebrations two years ago to commemorate its 75th anniversary. The predecessor of AFTRA was founded in 1937 as the American Federation of Radio Artists.
SAG currently has about 120,000 members while AFTRA has about 70,000. About 45,000 performers belong to both unions. Contact Dave McNary at dave.mcnary@variety.com

Nintendo Partners with DreamWorks Animation for Exclusive 3DS Video Content
Nintendo has partnered with DreamWorks Animation SKG to offer the world premiere of a pair of original 3D shorts featuring characters from blockbuster films Shrek and Monsters vs. Aliens on the Nintendo 3DS video service. The Halloween-themed shorts, "Night of the Living Carrots," which features Monsters vs. Aliens characters, and "The Pig Who Cried Werewolf," which stars the Three Little Pigs from Shrek, debut this week on the Nintendo 3DS video service. Nintendo 3DS gamers will be able to view these 3D videos for free on the Nintendo 3DS glasses-free gaming device.our editor recommendsIAC's CollegeHumor Partners With Nintendo 3DS on Original 3D Comedy VideosGDC 2011: Nintendo 3DS Gamers to Get Netflix Access, Free Wi-Fi Tony Elison, Nintendo of America's senior director and general manager of Network Business, said the videos will premiere on the portable gaming devices video channel and will be exclusive for a limited period of time. The videos will run about six minutes in length, with the longer video, "Night of the Living Carrots," being cut into two parts from its 13-minute running time to ensure bite-sized, portable viewing for the on-the-go gaming audience. "If you look at the success that DreamWorks has had at the box office, it's obvious 3D and animation work really well together," said Elison. "We have something pretty special on our hands here with these 3D shorts." STORY: Nintendo Slashes Prices of 3DS Device Jim Mainard, Head of Production Development for DreamWorks Animation, said Nintendo 3DS is a powerful platform that allows content creators to reach users on-the-go. Nintendo has also struck an on-going deal with 3net, the joint venture between Sony, IMAX and Discovery Communications, to bring short-format packages from that networks 3D programming to its gaming device. Nintendo will be able to select content from all of the networks shows. Elison said they're currently focusing on "Building the Brand," a documentary series that shows the inner-workings of the manufacturing processes of the world's most famous brands like Winnebago, the bull riding series "Bull Proof," and "Feeding Time," an up-close look at animals. Nintendo slashed the price of its struggling Nintendo 3DS hardware from $250 to $170 on August 12 and saw hardware sales skyrocket 260 percent. The company sold over 235,000 Nintendo 3DS units in the U.S. alone in August. That has broadened the potential audience for portable 3D content. "If you were to seize on a specific demo that we're targeting with this 3D content, early at launch we were focusing on the archetypal early adopter 20-something male gamer," said Elison. "But since the price drop, this audience is definitely becoming more universal. And we've broadened the scope of our video service to appeal to early adopters as well as families and kids." Elison said that since it's still very early in the Nintendo 3DS life cycle, there's no clear pattern of what genres do well yet on the 3D video front. Nintendo is blending content from megawatt brands like DreamWorks Animation with 3D animated content from independent producers who are pushing the boundaries of 3D. Ellison noted the partnership with College Humor has had success with its claymation dinosaur shorts. "A few rules of thumb when selecting the programming from the network is that we're looking for content that is creative, innovative and humorous," said Elison. "We've worked with Blue Man Group and they exemplify those things. Some of their videos start in 2D and switch to 3D for dramatic effect. We're looking for kid-friendly humor that's accessible." Nintendo has also worked with the band OK Go, which Elison said has consistently pushed innovation in music videos. The group filmed an exclusive 3D video for "All Is Not Lost" for the Nintendo 3DS. "When we work with the music industry that might be used to doing things edgy, we sit down with them and make sure the content appeals to everyone," said Elison. "They get it. There's an inner child inside everybody and that's something we've really been looking to draw out." Elison recently spoke at the 3D Entertainment Summit and he firmly believes that "3D isn't just about spectacle, there's a lot more you can do with 3D." With Nintendo 3DS now facing glasses-free 3D competition from new smartphones like the Sprint HTC Evo 3D and AT&T's Thrill 4G, both of which offer 3D Hollywood movies, Elison said Nintendo could explore long-form content in the future. "We don't have anything to announce in terms of long-form content today," said Elison. "We're trying to pick the content that best fits the portable lifestyle, but I wouldn't rule anything out." China's toon biz is growing up
BEIJING -- Chinese toons have long struggled in the face of stiff competition from the likes of "SpongeBob SquarePants" and Japanese anime classics, but Sun Lijun, one of China's top animation helmers and teachers, believes the local biz is set to explode.Dean of the animation school at the Beijing Film Academy, Sun recently directed the $12 million 3D chopsocky toon "Legend of a Rabbit," which has sold in 60 territories and has been bought by Cartoon Network. And he just signed up with Magic Dumpling Entertainment to helm animated 3D pic "Tofu Boy," a Chinese-themed spin on the Pinocchio tale set in today's Shanghai." 'Legend" signaled a new era in Chinese animation, and I hope it's a fresh start," Sun says. "It (achieved some) commercial success, but there is still a long way to go."The pic marked a welcome step forward from the controversy surrounding recent toon "High-Speed Rail Man," which had an identical storyline to the Japanese anime "Hikarian," produced by Tomy in 1998. Many have said plagiarism has been endemic in Chinese animation."Legend" won for animated feature at China's Huabiao Awards. The pic was made by formerly state-owned Tianjin North Film Studio, now emerging as a shingle to be reckoned with. Pic was co-produced by the Beijing Film Academy and Beijing Century Butterfly. Tai chi master Jing Jianjun was the pic's martial arts choreographer.Sun now turns his attention to "Tofu Boy" (working title), which Beijing-based Magic Dumpling is developing from a screenplay by Yi Yan and Wen Feng, with Disney alum Kevin Geiger, for a holiday 2013 release."I think the Chinese culture element is very important, but we need a better way to carry it to the rest of the world," Sun says. "Kevin (Geiger) can give us a more international platform."Many acknowledge that the Chinese toon biz still needs to resolve issues, including a lack of creativity. Projects like "Legend" and "Tofu Boy" rep efforts by Chinese shingles to upgrade the quality of local animation.Helping matters is the availability of state subsidies, including grants and tax breaks, for toonmakers. No other country offers as much support as China for cultural industries as it tries to transform the toon biz, Sun says.In 2010, total box office revenue from Chinese animated films was $31 million, a relatively small figure, and most animation is made for TV. Approximately $20 million of that total came from mainland toon "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf," while Hong Kong creations, such as cartoon pig franchise "McDull," also did decent B.O.Still, that reps only around one third of the $92 million that "Kung Fu Panda 2" grossed in China in the first six months of the year.Last year, China produced 385 animated skeins totaling 220,530 minutes of programming, compared with 21,800 minutes in 2004, ranking the country first in the world in terms of output, according to a government report on the industry published in July.Signs point to a confluence of China's and the West's toon cultures: A Chinese story like "Mulan" has become a Disney classic, while the Chinese elements in the "Kung Fu Panda" pics easily won over global auds. At the same time, U.S. toons such as "SpongeBob" are extremely popular in China.Meanwhile, China's biggest online video streaming site, Youku.com, has just struck a deal with DreamWorks Animation for online distribution of the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, the first time the studio's films will be available online in China. The toon shingle is also planning an animation studio in Shnaghai to produce content for the Chinese market. And with the fastest-growing box office in the world and a population that includes 367 million kids, China market potential for toons remains huge. Hong Kong Chooses 'A Simple Life' for Oscar Submission
HONG KONG Director Ann Hui's award-winning drama "A Simple Life" is selected to represent Hong Kong as the candidate for the 84th Academy Awards best foreign-language film, the Federation of Motion Film Producers announced on Thursday.Female lead Deanie Ip, who plays a domestic helper that has worked for the same family for more than half a century and raised the character played by Andy Lau, was named the Best Actress at the 67th Venice International Film Festival, where"A Simple Life" premiered earlier this month. The film, based on the true experiences of its producer Roger Lee, and backed by China's Poly Bona and Andy Lau's Focus Films, also took home various accolades in Italy in recognition of its theme of equality. The Federation selected the drama as the Oscar foreign-language film race contender from Hong Kong with a unanimous vote from its 11 board members, the Federation's chairman Crucindo Hung told "The Hollywood Reporter." The Peter Chan-directed "Wu Xia," and "Overheard 2" from writers-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong, were also on the shortlist.Hung said the Federation chose "A Simple Life," which he called "a film by a remarkable director showcasing an unsurpassed performance from an extraordinary actress," for its distinctive Hong Kong character in the portrayal of the intimate relationship and emotional bond between live-in domestic helpers and their employers that is part of the home life of many Hong Kong people. The Federation has high hopes for the film to receive a nomination from the Academy, 11 years after the first and only Hong Kong film was in contention in the foreign language film race since Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" was nominated and won the award."The Hong Kong film industry is mostly driven by commercial films, so perhaps our past selections didn't appeal to the taste of the Academy. But with a film like 'A Simple Life,' which has artistic merit and reflects Hong Kong society, we hope we have a better chance this year," Hung said.Although the film was selected as the Hong Kong candidate in the Oscar race of the year 2011, it is set for wide release in the territory in March 2012. The distributor has scheduled five daily screenings in one cinema of two-dozen seats that has begun on Tuesday for a week, a move met with criticism locally."We are meeting the terms of the Academy guidelines, which said the selection has to be the selection has to be shown domestically for one week," said Hung. "Our main concern as the selection committee is to that the film satisfy the competition criteria. We really don't care what the critics say." By Jolie LashLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Emily VanCamp requires a road to the negative side on Wednesday evening on Basic steps latest drama, Revenge. Within the completely new series, the first kind Siblings & Siblings actress assumes the starring role of Emily Thorne, a youthful lady who heads to her childhood home within the Hamptons, with a brand new title and bent on taking Revenge against individuals who required her father from her growing up, by framework him for any crime he didnt commit. Basic steps been doing plenty to advertise the show, including constructing a number of advertisements and dressing up buses in main marketplaces using the actress image, something VanCamp understood about, but nonetheless caught her unexpectedly the very first time she first viewed it, as she told AccessHollywood.com. Access Hollywood: Remember your reaction the very first time you saw among the advertisements?Emily VanCamp: I had been driving around the 101 to operate also it was some absurdly early hour, there it had been I'd no idea of what that will seem like there it had been, going to operate My mother was the very first person I known as once i scared my boyfriend s***less while he thought I had been engaging in any sort of accident. AH: Since you were screaming?EV: I saw the billboard, Im speaking with Frederick, I simply began strongly screaming. I couldnt accept is as true and that he turned out, hes like, What is happening? Are you currently OK? And [I stated], I simply first viewed it! I simply first viewed it! Thats so strange, thats so crazy. Hes like, Emily! I if you were dying. I Quickly known as my mother, and my mother was flipping by helping cover their me too and that i sent her an image from it. Its this kind of intense factor. You cannot prepare for this. That stuff does not really get old. AH: Emily, your character, is moderate in many her feelings. Have you ever think she would be a sociopath on some level?EV: Oh, absolutely. The very best comparison Ive had to date was that shes a kind of less homicidal version of Dexter, which rings so in keeping with me. In many ways, shes completely stop from her feelings. Which was kind of her coping mechanism in losing her father as well as in discovering many of these terrible things. But additionally, she'd an extremely violent teenage-hood, because she was torn from her father and experienced the promote care system On many levels, yeah, I believe shes a little of the sociopath. What is interesting, in entering the town with this particular major plan in writing, she's it altogether, its all completely plotted out. You will find certain figures which are really gonna challenge that about her which really kind of challenge that wall that shes set up for herself. AH: Can there be anybody you attempted to review to experience her?EV: It was less about studying reasons for others, but much more about determining precisely what happened to her, precisely what affected her to create her by doing this. I'd journals with lots of pictures and ideas and poems and concepts which i come up with to inspire the smoothness. Ive never really needed to develop a character in the ground-up like this. Lots of figures that Ive performed previously, I came from personal encounters or I possibly could connect with on the more human level, however with her, shes so not the same as who I'm, its similar to there is a separate a part of my brain which i share with her and that i depend on that to obtain me to individuals places I recieve. AH: The show opens using what seems to become murder mystery. Does that will get resolved this year?EV: [Author and Executive Producer] Mike Kelley has stated he really wants to finish up at that time by Episode 13. He does not want individuals to be waiting Well have another cliffhanger through the finish of year. AH: Is Nolan, the only real individual who knows who Emily is really, going to become liability because the season progresses?EV: At first, he becomes a bit of a friend to her. There is a quite interesting relationship and history. Amanda Clarks (Emily Thornes) father was among the only individuals who ever supported him, so he's a strange kind of father-boy reference to my [figures] father. She keeps track of him, she holds him on the tight leash, because who knows what hes gonna do, but theres a strange feeling of brother or sister competition together and that we begin to observe that increasingly more because the episodes engage in. AH: Your character provides extensive secrets What is one factor your castmates dont what you think they should?EV: Im quite a open book. Im confident all of them know this I've type of secret fascination with zombies. Im a large zombie aficionado. AH: Youre an excellent Walking Dead fan then?EV: The Walking Dead may be the finest factor, the finest tv program, I believe, inside a very long time. AH: And Andrew Lincoln subsequently is simple around the eyes.EV: Pretty good around the eyes, gotta say. However I mean Yeah, I've a little of the zombie fetish.
